History: CIU's First Intercollegiate Athletic Contest Scheduled for Aug. 25
May 07, 2012 When the Columbia International University men’s soccer team takes the field on Aug. 25, history will be made. For the first time in CIU’s 89-year history, the school will compete in intercollegiate athletics when the CIU Rams take on Toccoa Falls College in a 7 p.m. match on the new CIU soccer field.
CIU Athletics Director Kim Abbott released the schedule of 18 matches, half of them at home. CIU is a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) and will compete on the division 1 level.
The 2012 schedule includes matches with teams from South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida including in-state competitions with Bob Jones University and the University of South Carolina Sumter.
CIU Men’s Soccer Coach James Whitaker says he’s looking forward to making history. “We are very excited about the schedule for our inaugural soccer season,” Whitaker said. “Our team is coming together, and we will be working hard to put an excellent team on the field for our first season.”
CIU’s first soccer match marks the beginning of an aggressive five-year plan that includes men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball and softball, and men’s basketball and baseball. The CIU men’s and women’s cross country teams also begin competition this fall. Those schedules are still being completed.
